How to get to Isle of Wight

By Rail

Reading is the western terminus for the new Elizabeth Line which links directly with central London, the City and Docklands. Reading is also just 22 minutes on GWR trains from Paddington. In all, Reading is reachable directly from more than 250 locations by train.

By Road

Reading is at Junctions 10/11 of the M4 and has a direct RailAir road link with Heathrow Airport (40 minutes).

Train from London to Portsmouth:
Take a train from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour. This journey typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the specific service and time of day.
Upon arriving at Portsmouth Harbour, transfer to a ferry. The ferry journey to Ryde on the Isle of Wight takes about 22 minutes if you take the FastCat catamaran service. There is also a Hovercraft service from Southsea (near Portsmouth) to Ryde, which takes about 10 minutes.


Train from London to Lymington:
Take a train from London Waterloo to Brockenhurst. This journey usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes. At Brockenhurst, transfer to a train bound for Lymington Pier. The train station is conveniently located next to the ferry terminal. The transfer time can vary, but typically the wait is around 10 to 20 minutes. Upon arrival in Yarmouth, you can continue your journey on the Isle of Wight by car, bus, bicycle, or on foot.

Including transfer times, the entire journey from London to the Isle of Wight generally takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
